Renewing Your Mind
Romans 12:2 - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Beginning this journey to walking in your purpose has to start in a very difficult place. We learned in week 1 that accepting the salvation of God in Christ Jesus is truly gaining an understanding that we are a new creation. Becoming this new creation starts in the mind. Renewing the mind takes a process. First, we must realize that God graced us with free will, and with that will we can choose those things in our world that are glorifying to God. Philippians tells us that “whatever is true, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” We must choose, every day, to think of good and Godly things.
Next, we must take steps to guard against what we are putting into our minds. We live in a world where acceptance and self-worth is measured in likes, views, and followers on social media. We accept the evil that surrounds us as entertainment as it assaults our eyes, ears, and memories. We claim to be new creations, but we constantly dive into conversations and activities, which have always been a part of who we are and which consistently pull us away from our intended purpose and from our newfound freedom in Christ.
After guarding our minds against the things of this world, we must soak ourselves into the Word of God. As Colossians says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” We will only see God and His Son more if we search the word because that is where they can be found.
Finally, finish the transformation of being renewed by speaking truth to your spirit to replace the lies that you have lived in most of your life. The words you say have incredible power. According to Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Either your words can speak life or death to your own spirit, and for true transformation to take place, these words of life must be so ingrained in us that we live them out through our actions.
Walking in purpose involves removing yourself from the things of this world that used to bind you and walk in true freedom. A renewed mind allows a believer to finally focus themselves on the one thing which will lead them to their purpose, Jesus.
